It is estimated that accidents on the ramp and the resulting damage to aircraft and ground support equipment is costing the industry roughly $ 4 billion annually, most of this 'uninsurable or within deductibles limit'. There is a lot at stake here and all is not monetary as injuries to personnel and even deaths are not rare occurrences.

Furthermore, increasing congestion at airports and the pressure to turn aircraft around faster will make matters worse.

Armbrust 's brainchild the Airport Operations Safety Panel (AOSP) brought together leading industry experts to examine this problem and bring it to the attention of airline and airport executives worldwide for urgent action.
