India’s Carriers To Fight Service Tax On Airline Tickets Indian consumers will face increased air fares if a move by the finance minister to levy a service tax on tickets is ratified, airline executives claim, according to India’s Economic Times newspaper. “The service tax and increased operating cost would inevitably result into hike in fares. The industry needs relief, not the additional taxes,” said Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya. The Economic Times said that civil aviation minister Praful Patel has voiced his opposition to the move, saying he will request the government for a complete roll back of service tax on air travel. Mallya warned that the fragile recovery in air traffic will be threatened if carriers are burdened with additional taxes. Speaking with reporters at the India Aviation-2010 conference, Patel expressed optimism that the Indian civil aviation sector would see recovery by early 2011 if the current growth trend continued. According to The Hindu newspaper, Patel said trends in the last quarter of 2009 and early 2010 indicated that the worst in the sector may be over. |
